Fiorentina have launched their own fund-raising initiative during the coronavirus pandemic, initially donating €250,000 to local hospitals. “We support those who are doing everything they can to save lives,” said President Rocco Commisso.

Many Serie A clubs have created pages to help raise funds and help support the struggling health system in Italy, which has been over-whelmed by the sheer number of cases.

So far, 2,158 people have died in Italy after contracting the illness, with a further 1,851 in intensive care out of a total 23,073 cases.

Fiorentina announced they have donated €125,000 each to the Careggi Foundation and the Santa Maria Nuova Onlus Fiundation, representing local hospitals in Tuscany.

“I’ve been following the situation in Italy very closely and with a great degree of worry in recent days, albeit from afar,” said Commisso.

“I want to offer my support, my family’s support and that of the club and all our friends to all those who are doing everything they can to save lives and stop the spread of this invisible and insidious enemy as quickly as possible.

“I would like to invite the extended Viola Family to come together even more in this difficult time and support the people and organisations fighting on the front line. I want to say a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and hospital staff that are currently fighting the toughest of battles in Tuscany.”

The initiative is called Forza e Cuore – strength and heart – with details on how to contribute on the official Fiorentina website.

The money will be used to order and deliver equipment ranging from masks and hand sanitiser to virus testing kits and ventilators.
