Bordalas: 'Inter symbol of Serie A'

Getafe coach Jose Bordalas says club President Angel Torres’ decision not to travel to Milan to face Inter in the Europa League was “spot on” and that the Nerazzurri are “a symbol of Serie A.”

The Spanish outfit were due to play in Milan for the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie against Inter on March 12, however they refused to travel as the Coronavirus was rapidly spreading throughout northern Italy at the time.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Getafe coach Bordalas says it was the correct call to make.

“The President’s decision was incredibly spot on. Travelling at that moment was tremendously risky,” Bordalas told the Milan daily.

“Just think of what happened to others who went to Milan around that time, such as Valencia [to play Atalanta] or Real Madrid for basketball.

“Our stance has been positive for us and for football: it has opened the eyes of others.

“There were too many people who thought that nothing would happen and that we had to continue living in a normal way. Time would tell us it wasn’t like this.”

The Getafe boss however was full of praise for Inter.

“There’s little to say about Inter: an historic team, with a great coach and magnificent players, they are a symbol of Serie A, which is growing a lot in regaining their football status.

“Cristiano Ronaldo arrived and they’ve recently signed players from the Premier League, something unthinkable until recently.

“For us they will be a wonderful challenge.”

Given the devastating effects of the Coronavirus in Italy, it’s unknown at this point when football will resume.

“Exactly, a lot of speculation and no certainty. We hope to be able to play, and to do it soon.

“If we cannot play it in the classic way, at San Siro and here, I am sure that UEFA will find the best solution without affecting anyone.”
