Castillejo: 'We hope Pioli stays'

Samu Castillejo has revealed that he would like to see Stefano Pioli remain at Milan and admitted that he can’t wait to “feel the affection” at San Siro again.

The 25-year-old arrived from Villarreal in July 2018 and has played 59 games for the Rossoneri, scoring five times and providing eight assists in the process.

His performances have improved under coach Pioli and the former Spain Under-21 star admitted would like to continue working with the former Fiorentina coach, despite suggesting that “a lot depends” on himself.

“It’s not just the coach who puts you on the pitch, but a lot depends on the job done by the player,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “Sometimes the head is more important than anything, especially in times of difficulty.

“Pioli is a great coach; we hope to have him with us also next year.”

The 2-1 defeat to Genoa on March 8 was the last match before the season was suspended and Castillejo revealed that he is looking forward to return.

“The first thing I want, is to see San Siro packed again,” he added. “To feel the affection from the fans during our matches.”

Castillejo decided to remain in Milan after the Coronavirus outbreak, as he didn’t want to take any chances in fear of infecting his family members back home.

“I stayed in Italy mainly to not put anyone in my family at risk. The situation here was not easy, there were many infected people and I decided to stay in Milan.

Bot Paolo and Daniel Maldini have tested positive for the Coronavirus and Castillejo reveals that he was concerned.

“There was concern, especially for their health,” he added. “We hope that no other teammate is positive.

“I have heard from Daniel, he has no symptoms and I’m happy for him, he will surely recover well.”

Spain has been one of the countries most affected by the virus and he reveals that they are equally worried for each other.

“My family are fine and at home, they are also worried about me because I’m here on my own. We hope it passes as soon as possible, especially to have the chance to be close to my family.”
