Italian Olympics chief Giovanni Malago has claimed that the rugby federation’s decision to cancel the season “will happen in other sports too”.

It was announced this morning that the professional rugby season had been abandoned, yet the FIGC continues to hold out for a conclusion to the campaign.

Italian Olympics chief Giovanni Malago has claimed that the rugby federation’s decision to cancel the season “will happen in other sports too”.

It was announced this morning that the professional rugby season had been abandoned, yet the FIGC continues to hold out for a conclusion to the campaign.

However, Malago – while disagreeing with the FIR’s timing – expects other sports to follow suit.

“It’s a debatable call, but it’s clear that they didn’t want to wait any longer,” he told Radio 24.

“I’m not against the federation’s decision, but I don’t agree with the timing. They didn’t want to wait for a joint date.

“If it’s true that federations have the responsibility and honour of running themselves independently then it’s also true that there are regulations and you can’t give guarantees of safety.

“I’m not against it, but I don’t agree with the timing. What rugby has done will happen in other sports too.

“You have to look at everything independently.”
