Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne confirms he has a “really good” relationship with Gennaro Gattuso and that Italy have “the aim of winning” Euro 2021.

The Napoli squad is currently in self-isolation as part of Italy’s nationwide lockdown to combat the coronavirus pandemic, and Insigne explained how he and his colleagues were coping.

“We’re all working hard at home,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We have our own programmes to follow and we’re taking it very seriously. There may not be any games at the moment, but we’re professionals and we have to look after ourselves and maintain our fitness levels.

“I speak to my team-mates every day by messages or in WhatsApp groups. We’re trying to get through this period together by keeping each other company from afar.”

The club captain then spoke about his relationship with Gattuso, having seemingly fallen out with Carlo Ancelotti months prior.

“We speak nearly every day. We talk about the work I’m doing but not only about football. We speak about our families too and the emergency situation in general.

“[Our relationship is] really good. He made me feel important from day one. He’s very determined and demanding but he’s honest too.

“He says exactly what he thinks. He wants us to be fully focused every day and he keeps close tabs on us.

“Having a coach with so much playing experience helps us a lot. Gattuso won everything as a player and he’s constantly sharing his football knowledge with us.”

The European Championship has been moved back a year, but Insigne still expects Italy to compete for glory.

“There’s a really good spirit in the Italy camp and we’ve been flying recently. We’ll be competitive next year as well though and we might have a few players back from injury too.

“In any case, we’ll set out with the aim of winning.”
