Fiorentina midfielder Gaetano Castrovilli hopes to use next season to cement a place in Roberto Mancini’s Italy squad for Euro 2021.
Castrovilli has impressed at the Artemio Franchi this term, linking him with a move to the top clubs in Italy, but he is focused on “improving” and locking down a place in the Azzurri team.
With the European Championship postponed until summer 2021, the 23-year-old Viola star has claimed he will be in a better position after another year with “experience” in Serie A.
“We have to follow the rules and get through this period as soon as possible,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “I still have to accomplish everything, to be called up for the national team is a beautiful thing.
“I hope I never wake up from this dream. Mancini has taught me that dreams can come true. [Former Fiorentina coach Vincenzo] Montella and [current coach Beppe] Iachini have given me so much.”
Castrovilli made his debut for Italy against Bosnia-Herzegovina on November 15 last year, when he came on to play four minutes at the end of a 3-0 win at the Bilino Polje.
He was left on the bench in the 9-1 win against Armenia three days later, but his first taste of international football has made him believe in a future with the Azzurri and has vowed to work hard for a place in the side.
“I will have one more year of experience,” he added. “I hope to improve and work on my weaknesses.
“I miss the pitch, the teammates and the fans. We hope to improve day after day, also training from home.”
