The Rossoblu sit 17th in Serie A, only just outside the relegation zone, and Nicola had helped the Grifone turn their season around and give them hope of salvation in the top tier.

After a run of excellent results for Genoa, the season came to a standstill after a 2-1 win over Milan at San Siro, but the coach insisted that he doesn’t focus on the possible resumption during the current crisis in Italy.

“Everyone loves to do their job and I like to be on the bench,” he told SportItalia. “But at the same time, it’s clear that now it’s time to stay at home.

“I don’t think too much about the resumption. What you can and should do is accept whatever decision that will be made.

“I’m happy that everything has been interrupted given the current situation. Then, when they’ll tell us that we will be able to resume, my task will be to prepare for the return.”

“We have to be ready, but personally I struggle to talk about football right now. I have many friends who experience a difficult time and I also think of my sister who works in a hospital.

“When we restart, we will do it as a country.”

Nicola replaced Thiago Motta in December and returned to the club where he spent six seasons as a player during two different spells from 1995-98 and again from 1999-2002.

“This is the club that raised me and that gave me the opportunity to have a career in football,” he said. “The emotional connection is there and I’m proud to be part of this club.

“I think it’s an added value to know that and to deeply perceive the environment.”

But he doesn’t agree on the assumption that he does a better job when he replaces another coach in the middle of the campaign.

“I don’t agree. In Lumezzane and Livorno, I started from scratch. In Bari I took over and then I started from the beginning again. In Crotone, I started from the beginning. As a successor, I only worked in Udinese and Genoa. In any case, what matters is to do your best.”
