The Portuguese tactician spoke to Sky Sport Italia from the coronavirus lockdown, expressing his “absolute pride” in the series of Roma initiatives, including the donation of protective equipment, food and funds for local hospitals and residents.

“It wasn’t just raising money, as the club was operating with hospitals and the structures who were struggling. I really liked the delivery of food and medicine to the elderly, too.

“I talk to the players all the time, as we gave them individual training schedules, analyse their work and their food. It’s difficult to say how quickly we could get the players back in shape to play after resuming training, but I don’t think it should be too long, as they have never really stopped thanks to this work at home.

“Health is the most important thing, so when the conditions allow it, I believe it’s important that we see out the season.”

Fonseca and midfielder Pellegrini were praised by Roma legend Francesco Totti this week.

“Obviously, I am very happy to hear that and it’s wonderful to see my work appreciated. I think Pellegrini has everything it takes to become the Roma captain in future, so I agree with Totti on that.”
