Lecce striker Marco Mancosu admits sometimes he “hates” coach Fabio Liverani for working him too hard, while he burst into tears after scoring against Inter.
The 31-year-old is making the most of this debut Serie A season, finding the net eight times in 21 appearances.
“No goal has ever given me as strong an emotional response as the one against Inter,” Mancosu told Sky Sport Italia.
“I just started running, crying and kept saying: ‘I scored the goal.’ I couldn’t believe it. The free kick against Napoli was a better goal, though. I thought to myself before I took it, either this is going into the net or out of the stadium. I know that if I’d hit that into the wall, Liverani would’ve killed me.”
There certainly is a love-hate relationship with his Lecce coach, but one that works for them both.
“Liverani is like a jackhammer, he just does not stop and wants a result at all costs. I owe him so much, as he taught me how to really play football and what it means to be a professional player.
“Sometimes I hate him because of the endless pressure, he’s hard to keep up with, but I owe him a great deal.”
