Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli goes back over his “riches to rags” story with Milan. “It really hurt when I was told the club didn’t believe in me.”
The 22-year-old came up through their youth ranks and was tipped for greatness, but sold to Sassuolo for €12.5m plus bonuses in 2018.
“Let’s call it a riches to rags story at Milan, as at the beginning I was considered to be a star, which I absolutely was not,” he said in an Instagram interview with Sassuolo.
“This affected me for the rest of the season. I went from unforgettable moments to the next term dropping into the shadows. I take some of the share of the blame too.
“It really hurt when I was told the club didn’t believe in me. At that point, I had to make a different decision and it was the right one.”
Locatelli scored two goals for Milan, famously beating Juventus at San Siro on October 22, 2016.
“The goal against Juventus was one of the best moments of my life, truly unforgettable. It was a childhood dream come true and looking back at the video now, I still get goosebumps. However, I don’t want to be remembered only for that goal.”
