Italy legend Pietro Vierchowod has hit out at the state of defending in 2020. “The goals of today are an insult to football.”
Vierchowod is considered one of the all-time great defenders, with the likes of Marco van Basten, Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta having stated publicly that they struggled against the 61-year-old.
When asked about his contemporaries, the former Milan, Juventus and Sampdoria stopper claimed they “can’t read play or movement of the ball.”

“I’m waiting for a team to coach because I would like to teach defending,” he told Libero.
“The goals of today are an insult to football. Defenders can’t read play or movement of the ball.”
