Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has claimed football must resume because of ‘sporting and economic’ reasons.

Bundesliga champions Bayern have resumed training, initially with social distancing, but hope to gradually return to normal, only awaiting the approval from the German government to resume play.

“For three days we have resumed training in small groups, respecting all the health protocols,” Rummenigge told Corriere dello Sport. “Resuming on May 9 is one of the hypotheses in Germany, but we will decide the policy, as in Italy.

“We must return to the pitch for two reasons: the sporting one, with the title to be assigned, the relegations and the places for the cups; and the economic one since the TV rights have a lot of impact on the clubs’ revenues.

“We are waiting for the approval from the government.”

The former centre-forward and two time Ballon d’Or winner went on to claim that football is seeing the result of ‘living beyond its means’ for the ‘last ten years’.

“Football, in the last ten years, has been living beyond its means, constantly increasing costs,” he added. “The clubs have taken all the risks. In times like these, it’s not the balance sheet that counts, but the cash.”
