Adriano Galliani has claimed ‘football will explode’ if it doesn’t return to the pitch and suggested the different European Leagues ‘need not end at the same time’.
The former Milan CEO has begged football to wait until due time and return to the pitch ‘in safe conditions’ after the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Monza chairman stressed that the European Leagues will all have different timelines and claimed it was futile to insist on ending the championships at the same time.
“You can’t not resume play, but you have to do it in safe conditions,” Galliani told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I don’t understand this insistence to get back on the pitch early and start again in September, when the pandemic might still go on.
“At this moment, we can’t know. The government, according to the scientific community, will dictate the times, and the championships can end anywhere and in different times.
“Germany may begin earlier, and Italy is ahead of England concerning the peak of the virus. We need not all end at the same time. The championships must be concluded on the pitch because it’s the law of sport and because the system must be saved.
“Without returning to play, Serie A would lose a figure of €600m, without calculating the share that would come from the €400m at stake for the teams running in the European Cups. A small part would go to the Italian clubs.
“Football will explode if the championship is not finished.”
