Former star Jean-Pierre Papin feels Milan should continue with Paolo Maldini and claims the Rossoneri are ‘on the right path’.

The 56-year-old played two seasons at San Siro between 1992 and 1994 and spoke to the Gazzetta dello Sport about the current situation at the club.

“They need to have patience,” he told the newspaper. “But they’re on the right path. They need to trust the younger players without the crazy expenses.

“They need to have patience,” he told the newspaper. “But they’re on the right path. They need to trust the younger players without the crazy expenses.

“It’s not much that’s missing, the skeleton is solid and with two or three players, they can make the leap. Maybe the prices on the transfer market will drop after the crisis.”

His former teammate Zvonimir Boban was sacked from his role as sporting director earlier this year and Papin has pointed out that they must keep Maldini.

“I’m sorry for Boban and I read that Paolo could leave too,” he said. “Maldini is Milan, I don’t understand how they can think of starting again without him.

“And I like [coach Stefano] Pioli. I must admit I don’t know much about [Ralf] Rangnick, but a German who coaches in Italy seems a bit odd.”
