Atalanta defender Rafael Toloi is eager to get back on the pitch this season, especially in the Champions League. “We deserve to be here and anything is possible.”
La Dea are in their first ever Champions League campaign and, despite losing the opening three group games, swept through to the quarter-finals by eliminating Valencia.
If and when the tournament resumes, Atalanta will be in the final eight and even the format could potentially change to one-off games.
“We deserve to be here, we reached the quarter-finals through our own merit and at this point anything is possible for a team that believes in its capabilities,” Toloi told L’Eco di Bergamo newspaper.
Bergamo has been the worst-affected city in Italy from the coronavirus pandemic, with five times the average death toll this year, but Atalanta believe football can help ease that pain.
“I am very sad at everything we are experiencing and nobody could’ve imagined this. It’s hard to go to sleep at night, as you lie there thinking about what’s happening.
“I do believe it’s right to resume the season, obviously with all the necessary precautions. Football is joy and passion, so that can help everyone relax a little.”
