On the 22nd anniversary of his controversial Derby d’Italia performance, former Juventus defender Mark Iuliano says he ‘understands’ Inter’s anger.

Iuliano was an unfortunate protagonist when Juve faced Inter on April 26, 1998, with the two sides facing off in a Scudetto decider.

The ex-Italy international appeared to foul Ronaldo, but referee Piero Ceccarini waved play on and the Bianconeri held out for a 1-0 victory.

The Old Lady were crowned Serie A champions just days later, with the Beneamata having to settle for second place.

“Not a day goes by without someone telling me about it,” Iuliano told journalist Nicolo Schira during an Instagram Live interview.

“For the first few years, it bothered me a little that people remembered me for that incident and not the 15 years of an incredible Serie A career where I won everything.

“I met Ronaldo several times and we joked about it. I understand the anger of interisti at such a heated moment because they were playing for a league title.

“Off the pitch, on the other hand, we put it to bed.”

The incident has refused to go away, with Ceccarini changing his version of events several times over the years.
