Paulo Fonseca has confirmed that he would like Roma to sign two of his former Shakhtar Donetsk stars and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a permanent basis.

Several members of Shakhtar’s squad have been linked with following Fonseca to Roma in recent months, and the coach made no secret of his desire to bring in at least one of them.

“I know the skills of the Shakhtar players very well. They could play for the best European teams,” he told Ukrainian show Great Football.

“To be honest, I still keep an eye out for their players and I’d like, if possible, one or two of them.

“We’ll see what happens. I don’t need a big squad, I can count on the players I currently have.

“Perhaps there will be interest in their players. I’m aware negotiations with Shakhtar are extremely difficult.

“Right now, clubs want to pay less for new players. I’ll just say this: I’d take a couple of players for Roma.”

The Giallorossi have yet to negotiate an option to buy for Mkhitaryan, but the Portuguese is keen to keep the Arsenal loanee.

“I’ve already said it and I’ll say it again: I want Mkhitaryan to stay. Henrikh also wants to stay.

“However, it must be said that everything is on pause right now. We still need to talk to Arsenal.

“I want to keep working with him. He’s a great player and a great man.”
