Alessandro Florenzi reveals there was only one Roma player who didn’t believe they could complete the comeback with Barcelona – Kostas Manolas.
The full-back is currently on loan at Valencia, but admits he has no idea where he’ll be after June 30.
“I am at Valencia at the moment and it’s not clear yet whether FIFA will allow loans to be extended beyond then, because my contract expires in June and the season won’t end until at least July,” Florenzi told MotoGP champion Max Biaggi in an Instagram Live chat.
He was asked about Roma’s run to the Champions League semi-final, fighting back from 4-1 down to knock Barcelona out and then falling to Liverpool.
“After the 4-1 defeat in the first leg, we didn’t feel beaten. Something was strange. There were 25 of us in the squad and 24 believed that we could go through.
“There was one who didn’t believe we could do it at all and that was Manolas – then he scored to send us through! The only one who didn’t believe, and he made it happen.”
The Giallorossi won 3-0 with Manolas nodding in a corner for the third and decisive effort, knocking Barcelona out on away goals.
Roma went through to the semi-finals, but a 4-2 victory at the Stadio Olimpico wasn’t enough to overturn the 5-2 first leg result.
“When our team bus arrived for the second leg, it felt like being in Baghdad with all the smoke, flares and chants. I get goosebumps thinking about it.”
