After the Ligue 1 season was officially shut down by the French Government, PSG have been assigned the title, but the league will be denied €243m in TV rights money.

The announcement came on Tuesday that Ligue 1 would not be allowed to resume, with no games permitted on French soil even behind closed doors until September.

A decision has been made to assign the 2019-20 Ligue 1 title to Paris Saint-Germain, as they were 12 points clear at the top.

It is the third consecutive Ligue 1 title for Marco Verratti’s team and confirmed by the LFP.

The table will therefore be frozen and taken as it stands, which was written into the regulations already, so Olympique Marseille will enter the Champions League and Rennes the qualifying rounds.

Lille and Reims go directly into the Europa League group stage, while Nice enter play-offs.

The bottom two are relegated from Ligue 1 – Toulouse and Amiens – as the play-offs are cancelled, with Lorient and Lens moving up.

That is the subject of contention, as several clubs are already threatening to sue the French Federation.

To make matters more complicated, L’Equipe reports that BeIN Sports and Canal+ are refusing to pay the final €243m instalment of TV rights to the Ligue 1 clubs because the games were cancelled.

Belgium gave their Jupiler Pro League title to Club Brugge, but they had practically already won with 15 points advantage and there was only one round left when the season was halted, so the play-off system was scrapped.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, opted not to assign the 2019-20 title at all, even though Ajax were ahead on goal difference, also cancelling promotion and relegation from the Eredivisie.
