The current Tottenham Hotspur coach looks back over his career with Spanish paper Marca, on the eighth anniversary of Real Madrid winning La Liga under his leadership, which followed his Treble with Inter.

“It’s very difficult for me to say what was the high point of my career, but obviously the Real Madrid title was very important because it came during a special period in which Barcelona were dominating,” said Mou.

“Ending that domination and doing it by setting a new record for points and goals in Spain made it even more fascinating. We didn’t just win La Liga, we did it in a way that made history.”

While he is most famous for his Treble with Inter – winning the Champions League, Scudetto and Coppa Italia in 2010 – there is another special record he holds.

“My own personal Treble was winning the League in England, Italy and Spain. I am still the only coach to have achieved that, it is unique. The truth is that I really wanted to enter the history of football that way. Real Madrid wanted me to do it too.”

Mou is now back in England with Spurs, although during the COVID-19 crisis, he has been unable to oversee games.

“All I do now is watch matches at home. It’s a chance for me to learn about many other teams, but I do miss football. If we were able to play all the remaining games this season, it’d send an important signal to everyone in society.

“As for playing behind closed doors, there would be millions of people all watching simultaneously on television, so an empty stadium is never truly empty.”
