Lazio sporting director Igli Tare has claimed the government can’t stop football from resuming and revealed the players ‘celebrated’ the news about resuming training.

The Italian government has given the all-clear for training to resume today, but football still has to wait to learn about the resumption of the championship.

“I heard that a legal order to block the championship may come this week,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “But that’s not their field. FIFA and UEFA have expressed themselves clearly and said that the championships must be concluded.

“We can also resume in June and conclude between August and September, taking advantage of the fact that the 2022 World Cup will be held during winter.

“To finish the current season will also serve as an experience to start the next one. Before the resumption we will have to do the serological tests.

“Earlier, an order was issued to resume activity on May 6, now it can be done tomorrow. The idea that Lazio are pushing to resume the campaign has been badly conveyed. We have all gained on the pitch, the path remains long and theoretically we can’t guarantee a presence in the Europa League. For us, we must give a strong signal to the system of Italian football.

He said Lazio acted responsibly to the pandemic and has claimed the Aquile were one of the first to take action.

“We were the first club to stop following the pandemic. We were among the first to comply with all the orders of the government, nobody left Rome, we respected everything. I understand that other teams have players abroad, but it’s not for me to judge.

“We have been a bit aggressive in our communication, but we have seen the damages football, which is the third largest industry in Italy, will suffer.

Tare played down the title battle but has revealed the players at Lazio are eager to resume training and admitted they celebrated when the news broke.

“To talk about the Scudetto, with 12 games to go and 36 points still up for grabs, seems a bit much. I hope so, but I don’t think we will be the same team when we restart. The players have kept still, [coach Simone] Inzaghi and I have been answering their questions about when to start for three weeks.

“Yesterday, when the order came out, everybody celebrated, because we can start again.”
