Sinisa Mihajlovic explains he returned to Bologna last season because ‘I don’t like owing debts and I wanted to finish the job I started’.

Bologna was the first club Mihajlovic coached during the 2008-09 campaign but was dismissed before the season was out, with the side in relegation trouble.

However, the Serb embarked on a second tenure in January 2019 and made easy work of guiding the Rossoblu to safety with 30 points in just 17 games.

“The greatest satisfaction I’ve experienced with Bologna, until now, is to have kept them up,” he said during a seminar with youth players.

“In that situation, even the greatest optimists would never have thought we could end the season like we did.

“Bologna were the first team I coached and I haven’t forgotten it. A Serie A team who put their faith in a lad who had just stopped playing.

“It didn’t happen at all 10 years ago, now it does a bit more, and it’s something I haven’t forgotten. It’s also a reason why I came back here.

“I don’t like owing debts and I wanted to finish the job I started. I came back for the fans: the following season I kept up Catania and when I came to play Bologna, the fans got to their feet.

“I’ve always had a beautiful memory of the city and its people. When they called me back last season, I didn’t give it a second’s thought. I wanted to repay Bologna.”
