Milan were seventh in Serie A and in the Coppa Italia semi-finals before the season halted to a stop, but clubs can resume team training from Monday ahead of the campaign possibly restarting next month.

“Now I’m less afraid, but I wasn’t even afraid when the Coronavirus first came about,” Calhanoglu told Sky Sport Italia.

“If you have to catch it, you catch it. I hope we can start playing again because football is our life.

“Training like this isn’t the best. I miss group training, I miss my teammates, my friends.

“We’re following the news every day, but it always changes from week to week so mentally it’s difficult for us.

“We still want to reach the Europa League and win the Coppa Italia. We want to do well in both competitions.”

The Germany-born midfielder was then asked about the likely arrival of Ralf Rangnick at San Siro, amidst speculation the coach wants to retain him.

“I know him through some of my teammates who had him as a coach. Whether Rangnick arrives or not isn’t up to me.

“I respect everyone, him and Pioli also. I like them both.”
