Medic fears injuries in 'the new reality'

Giacomo Zanon, head of the Sports Traumatology Unit at the Policlinico di Pavia, fears several fatigue related injuries when Serie A resumes.

The current orthopaedic consultant at Atalanta claims the club medics will have to ‘consider’ a host of problems during the ‘new reality for everyone’ involved in the League.

“There are some problems to consider,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “First, the suspension of training. Two months at home against 20 days of active rest, traditionally foreseen during the summer break.

“Then, the very short athletic training after at long period of inactivity. This aspect increases the possibility of overload pathologies, such as tendinopathies and muscle injuries.”

But the medic thinks data analysis will be key for the clubs to read the ‘signals coming’ from players.

“The history of a player can help read the signals coming from their bodies. However, this is a new reality for everyone.

“Rotation, big squads and data analysis will make the difference.”
