Ex-Roma defender Guillermo Burdisso has revealed how Daniele De Rossi wanted to become a coach for Boca Juniors after he hung up his boots.
Burdisso and De Rossi were Roma teammates during the 2010-11 campaign and faced off as rivals earlier this season, with Nicolas’ younger brother playing for Boca’s rivals Lanus.
The former Italy midfielder has since returned home and retired from football, but Guillermo reckons he had ‘more to give’ in the Argentine capital.
“De Rossi started well. He showed his quality in his first few games until he got injured,” he told Soy Fiera.
“His mistake was wanting to come back early and returning as quickly as possible because he got injured again.
“For a player his age, being out for so long isn’t easy. When he had to show his quality again, he found it tough.
“I met up with him and we talked about Boca a lot. His plan was to stay in Buenos Aires and remain linked to Boca as a player winning something or as a coach. He was sure of it.
“His return to Italy was more a personal matter. Perhaps [his family] couldn’t accompany him like they did at the beginning.
“It’s a shame because he had more to give.”
