Nicola: 'It was a strange match'

Genoa coach Davide Nicola claims he has ‘no time’ to dwell on the thumping 4-1 defeat to Parma and wanted to focus on bouncing back against Brescia.

Genoa sit 17th in Serie A and returned to action with a wake-up call against the Gialloblu. Nicola was not happy with the lack of organisation and compactness but looks ahead to amend and improve.

“It was a particularly strange match for us, it was the first after the break,” Nicola told DAZN. “We had the possession, but in a sterile way.

“We didn’t attack the spaces, we stretched on several occasions and we didn’t manage to be as aggressive as we wanted.”

Andrea Cornelius scored another hat-trick, his second of the season, as Parma impressed at the Marassi and Nicola conceded that the Gialloblu were the better side.

“Parma managed to set up the game immediately in their congenial way. I could have looked at what to do if we drew.

“We were not organised and compact, the vertical play was missing. We tried to change something, but we couldn’t find the necessary gaps and we didn’t take advantage of our characteristics.”

Nicola has no time to dwell on the defeat, as Genoa prepare to face Brescia on Saturday and will use Tuesday’s performance to evaluate how the Grifoni can bounce back immediately.

“We have no time to regret too much. We must quickly evaluate how much need to be improved because in a few days we are back on the pitch.

“We reacted immediately to the first goal conceded but the match reveals that we weren’t able to attack the spaces.

“Tonight’s match must give us the awareness of what to improve. We are trying to work to resume what we have shown previously.

“We don’t look back; we have 11 games to reach our target. We had the answers on what and where to improve and we must do it quickly.”

The Rossoblu coach ended the press conference by giving a short update on the fitness situation of Domenico Criscito and Antonio Sanabria.

“We’ll see what Criscito had but Sanabria is nothing to worry about, we preferred not to risk anything.”
