Serie B: Inzaghi's Benevento can match Ascoli's record from 1978

Benevento are closing in on Serie A and can confirm their promotion with a win against Juve Stabia tonight, and three points would mean equalling Ascoli’s record from 42 years ago.

The Stregoni have outclassed the rest of the division this term and currently sit 22 points above second-placed Crotone and 23 points ahead of Spezia at third.

With 24 points left to play for in the League, negative results for Crotone and Spezia could still confirm Benevento’s arrival to Serie A, as they play Pisa and Ascoli respectively.

At the same time, Benevento threatens to match Ascoli’s current record of securing promotion with seven games to go in 1977-78.

At the time, Ascoli secured promotion with 61 points and seven rounds of fixtures left of the two-point system back then.

Filippo Inzaghi’s men could secure promotion by picking up 76 points in the new format and the Mayor of Benevento Clemtente Mastella confessed he was a bit worried about the imminent celebrations, asking the people to celebrate on their balconies.

“I hope with almost certainty that we will finally return to Serie A,” he told, according to Il Mattino. “I would like to invite everyone to celebrate with an explosive and extraordinary chemistry, but let’s stop there.

“We won’t gather because the virus is still active even if we are far away from it. We would give a very nice sign, truly incredible, if the whole city would decorate their balconies, windows, terraces and welcome the players, the technical staff and managers.

“We would be a bit unique from this point of view and we could also enter the Guinness Book of Records. Those who live in the alleys and not on the main street can be accommodated on the balcony or the terraces of a neighbour.

“I hope everything goes well.”

Benevento play at 20:00 GMT at the Ciro Vigorito tonight, the same time Ascoli host Crotone and Spezia take on Pisa at home.
