SPAL coach Gigi Di Biagio was inevitably left frustrated after an own goal gave Milan the stoppage-time equaliser. ‘We were so close…’
The relegation strugglers had taken a shock 2-0 lead through Mattia Valoti and the long-range Sergio Floccari stunner, but Marco D’Alessandro received a straight red card for his tackle on Theo Hernandez.
“It’s a shame, because we really were so close and had started to believe we’d done it,” Di Biagio told Sky Sport Italia after the 2-2 draw.
“We worked hard, were well set out and were doing very well, which was not easy when down to 10 against 11 for an hour. I am truly proud of my players, it’s only natural after having worked so hard, it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.
“I couldn’t have asked for any more from the lads. We have to keep trying, we’re alive and kicking, so must believe to the very end. Just as we lost points at the 95th minute in recent weeks, it can happen to other teams.”
Floccari’s long-range dipping half-volley was his first Serie A goal of the season and one that will no doubt go viral.
“Sergio has these extraordinary abilities and is in good shape. We know he can do these things.”
