Sampdoria coach Claudio Ranieri praised the importance of Gaston Ramirez and claims the three points against Lecce ‘helps us breathe’.

Two penalties from Ramirez gave the Blucerchiati three vital points in the relegation battle against 18th-placed Lecce at the Via del Mare.

“These guys rejuvenate me,” he told Sky Sport Italia after the final whistle. “You must always be ready.

“It was difficult tonight, we are not used to staying in the positions we played this time, but we fought on every ball and the three points helps us breathe.

“But it’s not over yet.”

Ranieri admitted the Lecce players were not helped by having to play without their fans.

“Today Lecce were limited playing without fans, we are playing an anomalous championship which, however, must be finished.

“We must continue to struggle like today. We must face SPAL like this.”

Ramirez helped Sampdoria sit four points clear of the relegation zone with nine games remaining and the coach felt the Uruguayan showed his decisiveness against the Giallorossi.

“Gaston Ramirez’s charisma and experience are important for us. Something can always come from him.”
