Gaston Ramirez has claimed Claudio Ranieri makes him ‘feel important’ but conceded Sampdoria are still some way from reaching their target.

The Uruguayan scored two penalties to hand the Blucerchiati an important 2-1 win against relegation rivals Lecce on Wednesday and the forward was lucky that the first one ended up in the back of the net.

“I kicked it high and I feared the deflection, but the second one was too difficult for the goalkeeper,” he told the club’s official website.

“We knew it was very important to get a result after the three defeats. It was a game we had to win, a direct clash.”

Coach Ranieri praised the 29-year-old, who has scored seven goals in 19 games and is one away from matching his best return in Serie A.

“I feel important, very important. I can feel the trust, and this makes me feel great. Ranieri knows how to get the best from us and what to tell us when we need it.”

With four points down to the relegation zone and nine games remaining, Ramirez is only focused on getting the job done.

“We must think about the next game. It doesn’t matter that we have an advantage over Lecce. It’s important to focus on the next game.”
