Gian Piero Gasperini confirms Atalanta’s Champions League ambitions and the importance of Papu Gomez. ‘He is the ultimate emblem of this team.’
The trip to Cagliari kicks off on Sunday at 18.30 UK time (17.30 GMT), click here for a match preview.
“All the victories we achieved have been fundamental, but the one against Napoli may well prove the most important in terms of the table,” Gasp told the official Atalanta website.
“We could not have asked for a better run coming back from the lockdown. It’s not easy playing in these circumstances, behind closed doors, in the heat and every three days. The value of the teams change and you have to adjust game by game.
“Cagliari are still in the running for their objective with nine rounds to go and we want to continue our positive period. It’s a difficult match, but we want to qualify for the Champions League again.”
Papu Gomez is the heart and soul of this Atalanta squad, perhaps the one player they really cannot do without.
“He is the ultimate emblem of this team, for the quality he has as well as his effort,” added Gasperini.
“He plays for the team, in different roles, and is always useful to the cause. He is a fundamental figure for our squad.”
