Goalkeeper Alex Meret says he is determined to ‘win over Gennaro Gattuso on the pitch’ and ‘stay at Napoli for a long time’.

Meret was Carlo Ancelotti’s undisputed No 1 but has fallen behind David Ospina in the pecking order since the appointment of Gattuso in December.

Despite that, the 23-year-old has no plans of leaving Napoli any time soon and is ready to fight for his place.

“There’s three of us and the other two are very strong. There’s some proper competition here, but it’s lively.

“Performance in training or matches shows who’s the most in form. I go by the decisions made by the club.

“Obviously I hope to get the role I want in the team, but it all depends on me. I’m sure of one thing: I’ll always give my best and, if possible, even more.

“I’d like to stay at Napoli for a long time. The surroundings here are ideal, in a fantastic city.”
