When Andrea Stramaccioni’s Inter beat Genoa 5-4 on April 1, 2012, both sides finished the match with 10 men in the last Serie A match containing four penalties.

Four penalties in one single game have only been awarded seven times throughout the history of Serie A and the record has never been beaten.

Three of the times it has happened whilst Inter play at home, the first in a 4-2 win over Atalanta in 1988-89, and the last time in a thriller ending 5-4 against the Rossoblu in 2011-12.

Paolo Valeri was at the whistle when Inter had taken a 3-1 lead at half time through a brace from Diego Milito and a tap-in by Argentine defender Walter Samuel. Emiliano Moretti had given the guests some hope right before the break with another close-range finish.

Despite having four goals at half-time, the action didn’t stop after the break, as Inter continued their aggressive approach and had a couple of decent chances before Javier Zanetti was punished for a handball in the area.

Rodrigo Palacio made no mistake against his soon-to-be teammates and Genoa were back in it. Mauro Zarate found the net 15 minutes later, to make it 4-2 for the hosts, before the same Palacio was brought down by Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar and awarded the second penalty of the match.

The Brazilian was sent off and Alberto Gilardino stepped up to slot home the second penalty of the match to make it 4-3 with approximately 10 minutes remaining.

After 84 minutes Fernando Belluschi heads for an early shower after having fouled Fredy Guarin for the match’s third penalty, which Milito puts to bed and restores the two-goal lead.

In the 89th minute, the record was matched when Valeri points to the penalty spot for the fourth time . Lucio had sent Giuseppe Sculli to the ground and Gilardino scored his brace in the 90th minute, giving the Nerazzurri fans a nervous end to the match.

After three minutes of stoppage time, Valeri blew the final whistle, stopping the match at 5-4 to Inter, in the club’s third match in history with four penalties awarded.
