The 59-year-old played here from 1981 to 1992 as a defender, then took on a series of different directorial and coaching roles within the club.

He had until yesterday been a director working with the Roma Women’s team, but his contract was allowed to expire.

“You gave sweat and tears to your jersey, your team, your Roma, your adopted city,” wrote Nela’s daughter Ludovica on Facebook, as reported by the Corriere dello Sport.

“You continued to serve and honour the name and values of that history that this club wanted to cancel. Yesterday, someone wanted you to no longer be a part of THIS Roma.

“But the truth, dear Father, is that YOU ARE THE HISTORY OF ROMA and nobody can cancel that from the memories of those who saw you wear the shirt.”

Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Florenzi have all pointed to almost an attempt to tear out the Roman roots of the club, with figures behind the scenes released from their contracts too.

This will be another step in the growing war between the ultras and President Jim Pallotta.
