Nedved: 'Real Madrid and City could win'

Pavel Nedved warns the first Juventus objective is to ‘get to Portugal’ for the Champions League, then Real Madrid and Manchester City are ‘candidates for the trophy.’

The draw has been made for the Final Eight Champions League mini-tournament, which will run in Lisbon from August 12-23 with a series of one-off knockout games.

If Juve overturn the 1-0 first leg Round of 16 defeat to Lyon, then they’ll face Real Madrid or Manchester City in the quarter-final.

The semi-final would then have Napoli, Barcelona, Chelsea or Bayern Munich.

“First and foremost, we have to get through the Round of 16 and are well aware there is a very difficult second leg that awaits us,” Nedved told the UEFA website.

“The draw is very exciting, but it’s always difficult to choose an opponent from the quarter-finals onwards, as all the teams are strong at this stage.”

Nonetheless, Juve’s side of the tennis-style draw is considerably tougher, as the teams here have won 26 Champions League trophies between them, compared to zero on Atalanta’s march towards the Final.

“Real Madrid and Manchester City are two candidates for the trophy and in any case a very difficult clash,” continued Nedved.

“Now our objective is to get to Portugal. This new format, with three knockout games, is very interesting for the whole football world, especially as it is played during a period where normally there is no football.”
