“From the outside, it’s entertaining to watch one game after another, especially after months of lockdown, but the players obviously might prefer a little more rest,” Maldini told DAZN.

Considering the excellent form they’ve had under Stefano Pioli since the restart, are there regrets for what the season could’ve been for Milan?

“You rarely end the season without some regrets, as either you win everything, or there are moments that will stick in your mind. There’s no point thinking about the past, the important thing is to live in the now and turn over a new leaf.

“We had the choice whether to fight it out to avoid sliding backwards or to close on the teams above us in the table and we made a clear decision.”

A definite boost came in the January transfer window with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Simon Kjaer.

“Young players are always going to have some ups and downs, so in difficult moments, they will cling to the more experienced figures.”
