Speaking before Inter’s Serie A showdown with Roma this evening, Marotta was asked to rate Antonio Conte’s debut season in charge.

“There are still five games of the season left so more time is needed,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Having said that, Conte’s work has been positive, not only in terms of results but also in terms of the values that he’s transmitted to the team.”

The general manager then replied to questions about Roma pair Zaniolo and Edin Dzeko, as well as Manchester United loanee Alexis Sanchez.

“He’s one of most interesting players in the league, but we haven’t approached Roma officials and probably won’t.

“It’s a bit inappropriate to talk about the transfer market now. There are competitions that still have to end and the upcoming window will be an unusual one.

“As for Sanchez, we’ll make targeted assessments on him and see what can be done. I think mixing experienced players with younger ones is the right thing to do.

“We’re looking for both kinds of players. Investing in talent is a job for the future. Experienced players, on the other hand, can make an impact immediately.

“We have to raise the bar and get closer to victory.”

Nainggolan’s season-long loan at Cagliari is about to end and the Sardinians have no option to buy…

“He’ll end the season with Cagliari, even if he’s injured, then he will come back with us and we’ll assess him. However, we’ll also have to take market developments into account.

“Modern football tells us that coaches have to adapt to opponents and circumstances. The more flexible the player, the better.

“Directors in today’s football try to aim high. If objectives aren’t achieved, that shouldn’t be treated as a defeat.”

Eriksen starts as a substitute at the Olimpico, so how much should we read into that?

“We play every three days so it’s normal for a coach to make their assessments. It’s not a rejection.”
