Fabio Liverani accepts Lecce’s fate is no longer in their hands after their 3-1 win against Brescia but claims the coronavirus lockdown ‘devastated’ them.

Gianluca Lapadula’s brace and a Riccardo Saponara goal moved Lecce to within four points of safety in Serie A with three games remaining, relegating Brescia in the process.

“We’re no longer the masters of our destiny, but we can have no regrets in the event the others let us back in,” Liverani said after the game.

“The lads have played a season of suffering and quality. We had a good first half, going forward with personality and precision.

“The lockdown was devastating for us and playing every three days has changed the rules of the sport.

“Teams like ours, built to play only one game a week, went into crisis, as was to be expected.

“Today I was forced to get something out of Lapadula, who I must thank because he played with ankle pain, and Falco, who needed infiltrations to play.

“If they hadn’t put their hearts into it tonight, we would’ve struggled to name 11 players.”
