Lecce President Saverio Sticchi Damiani is ‘absolutely furious’ at the refereeing in a 3-2 defeat to Bologna. ‘That penalty incident weighs on our season.’
The Salentini had come back from 2-0 down to 2-2 at the Stadio Dall’Ara, only to be beaten 3-2 deep into stoppages by a Musa Barrow counter-attack.
“We are third from bottom and can still reach 38 points, which would be a decent tally, but might not be enough to save us,” the President told TRNews Talk.
“After the rough start, the team showed such heart to get back to 2-2 and once again a penalty at the 94th minute wasn’t given to us, but would’ve allowed us to go into the game with Udinese as favourites.
“That penalty incident weighs on our season, as it’s the difference between the top flight and Serie B. I am aware we could’ve done better, but there was also clearly a penalty and I am absolutely furious it wasn’t given.
“The referee should’ve at least gone to view it on the VAR monitor. We have to work out if we want VAR to be used properly, or if like now it only serves to falsify results. We can’t keep having some teams examined in minute detail and not others.”
There are reports coach Fabio Liverani could leave if Lecce are relegated, with Cagliari said to be interested.
“Any discussion about that now is premature. Obviously, the club is taking everything into account in making plans, but this isn’t the right time to talk about it.
“I will just say that anyone who is at Lecce must be honoured and motivated to be here, not just staying on for the sake of it.”
