“Antonio Conte has done excellent work in raising the quality level of the team. The regrets remain, but we must look to the future with optimism and aware we must keep raising the bar,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

Alexis Sanchez starts this evening, but Manchester United are still refusing to let him stay beyond the Europa League Round of 16 clash with Getafe.

“It’s not easy, he has a two-year contract with Manchester United, so we have to evaluate the situation. It’d be a shame if we couldn’t reach an agreement, because we want Sanchez today and tomorrow.”

Reports continue to suggest Inter are close to agreeing a deal with Brescia for midfielder Sandro Tonali.

“We have a very good rapport with President Massimo Cellino, but have never discussed this talent. Many big clubs are naturally interested in Tonali, as are we, but that’s a long way from saying we’re in negotiations.”

Marotta is more open when it comes to discussing the improbable rumours about Lionel Messi coming to Inter.

“No Italian club can complete a transfer operation like that without the owners making a big contribution, so with Financial Fair Play regulations as they are, we have to be sustainable.

“We need to get Serie A back to being the league where champions arrive and don’t leave. The debate is all about TV rights, but we also need to evaluate what we’re selling and star names do increase the value of the brand.”
