Roma and Napoli will start their Europa League campaign in the group stage from October 22, but Milan begin in the preliminary rounds on September 17.
The Giallorossi fought back for a 3-2 victory away to Torino this evening, enough to guarantee fifth place regardless of what happens in the final Serie A round.
That means Roma and Coppa Italia winners Napoli go directly into the Europa League group phase for the 2020-21 season, which begins on October 22.
If Milan are to join them, then they must first get through three preliminary round stages.
Those will be played on September 17, September 24 and October 1.
There is another alternative, which is that if Roma win the Europa League this season, they will go into the Champions League instead.
At that stage, Milan would be bumped up to the Europa League group phase and the next team down would enter the Europa League.
If Roma win the Europa League and Napoli also win the Champions League, both those clubs will go into the Champions League, meaning fourth place in Serie A would only provide entry into the Europa League.
