Napoli lost 2-0 to Inter last time and Mertens wants to bounce back immediately and end the season with a win against Lazio on Saturday.

“On Saturday we have an important match against Lazio and we must be confident and ready,” Mertens told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

But Napoli are preparing for a big match against Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League on August 8, but it will be carried out behind closed doors at Camp Nou.

“Anything can happen. It was strange when we first played behind closed doors against Inter, you could hear everything,” he said. “I’m used to it by now.”

Aurelio De Laurentiis has claimed the match should be moved to Portugal or Germany due to fears of coronavirus in Catalonia, but Mertens only concentrates on the game.

“We don’t have to worry too much, let’s just play. [Coach Gennaro] Gattuso is charged. If you aren’t convinced about this game, you can’t play football.

“We must go there to make a good impression and write history.”

The Belgium international was linked with Inter last winter but ended up renewing with the Azzurri.

“I waited a little while, but in the end we did it. My future is on Saturday, I want to score against Lazio.”

The 33-year-old has vowed to help the new attackers Andrea Petagna and Victor Osimhen to ‘fit in’ at the San Paolo.

“I want to help the team and the young people, that’s my future. I want to help Osimhen and Petagna, we can play together.

“It’s difficult to come from another country and settle in, we must help them fit in here.”
