Despite Walter Zenga’s optimism, it’s widely reported Eusebio Di Francesco is the favourite to lead Cagliari next season, as Fabio Liverani is hesitating.
Zenga was hired to replace Rolando Maran on March 3, but is unlikely to be kept on after three wins, four draws and five defeats.
According to Sportitalia and Sky Sport Italia, there was a positive meeting between Di Francesco and President Tommaso Giulini on Friday.
The contract on offer is similar to the deal that Di Francesco rejected from Deportivo Alaves, specifically a two-year agreement worth €1.8m per season.
Following his rapid hiring and firing from Sampdoria, the former Roma and Sassuolo coach is eager to choose the right project for his style of football.
Liverani had been the favourite, but it’s claimed he is hesitating to see if Lecce manage to secure their Serie A safety first.
He took the Salentini to promotion last season and can still turn it around on the final day, but only if Lecce beat Parma and Genoa don’t get the victory against Hellas Verona.
