With Chris Smalling increasingly unlikely to extend his stay from Manchester United, Roma are reportedly targeting free agent Jan Vertonghen.
Multiple sources in Italy report the negotiations to keep Smalling on a permanent basis, or even extend his loan beyond the Europa League Round of 16 tie with Sevilla, are on the verge of collapse.
Manchester United are demanding €20m plus €5m in bonuses and Roma’s offer stays firm at €15m.
According to the Corriere dello Sport newspaper, the Giallorossi are therefore looking at cheaper and more reliable options.
That means free agent Vertonghen, who is available after letting his Tottenham Hotspur contract run down.
The 33-year-old Belgium international has long been linked with a move to Serie A, with Inter and Lazio also interested.
It’s suggested he could agree a Roma deal for two years, with option for a third, at €3m per season.
