Fabio Liverani said Lecce ‘can be proud we played attacking football everywhere and never went defensive,’ so he could stay even after relegation.

The Salentini needed to beat Parma this evening and hope Genoa did not get a victory against Verona, but ended up relegated by a four-point gap.

“The head-to-head defeat with Lecce was certainly an important moment, but not the decisive one, because we also had chances in later games, for example against Cagliari when we hit the post of an open goal, or the last-gasp defeat at Bologna after we’d come back from 2-0 down,” Liverani told Sky Sport Italia.

Genoa ultimately beat Verona 3-0, while Lecce lost a 4-3 thriller at home to Parma.

“It was a learning curve for everyone here and perhaps it went a bit too quickly in some ways. The team can be proud that Lecce played football in every stadium all over Italy, always playing attacking football, never went defensive or hoofed it out of play just to break up the tempo.”

The Salentini certainly didn’t hold back, because they scored 52 goals and conceded 85 in 38 games.

Liverani has been linked with numerous clubs over the last few weeks, but made a surprise announcement.

“I won’t deny it was pleasing to know I was appreciated by other clubs, but I have no particular ambition for a Serie A side above all else. I want somewhere I can express my ideas and work the way I want to. That is more important than the division.

“I am relatively young, I am in no rush, so I want a project where I can play my football. That could be at Lecce, we’ll see when everything has calmed down a little.”
