Remo Freuler assures Atalanta will face PSG in the Champions League ‘for Bergamo,’ but doesn’t believe Kylian Mbappé and Marco Verratti are ruled out yet.
La Dea are the huge surprise of this season, as in their first ever Champions League tournament, they have reached the Final Eight tournament in Portugal.
They’ll take on Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-final on Wednesday August 12, played behind closed doors on neutral turf.
“We are playing with Bergamo and for Bergamo, which gives us extra strength,” Freuler told L’Eco di Bergamo newspaper.
“This land has suffered so much, we know that too well in this squad, so that’s further motivation when we step on to the pitch. It was in Serie A, it will be again in Lisbon.”
Bergamo was the worst hit city in Italy by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the iconic, chilling image of a convoy of military trucks carrying coffins to other towns, because their crematorium could not keep up.
Atalanta will be without Josip Ilicic, while goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini is still in doubt, but PSG have huge injury concerns for Mbappé and Italy international Verratti.
“I know Angel Di Maria is suspended, but I will only believe Mbappé and Verratti are out when I see the team on the pitch,” added Freuler.
“This is a Champions League quarter-final, everyone wants to be there and they’ll do everything they can to take part.”
Atalanta are in the Final Eight, so who does Freuler tip for the ultimate victory?
“Bayern Munich, Barcelona, or whoever gets through between Manchester City and Real Madrid. I hope next season we can be up against Liverpool, or maybe Bayern Munich.”
