UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has claimed it will be ‘impossible’ to repeat the Final Eight format of the Champions League and the Europa League.
This year’s quarter-finals, semi-finals and Final of the Champions League are being held in Lisbon, Portugal, as UEFA needed to come up with an efficient solution to conclude the campaign after the lockdown.
The Europa League was moved to Germany, where Inter are currently preparing to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals on Monday, and President Ceferin admits the new format is attractive.
But the UEFA chief can’t picture it being possible to continue with the format in the future.
“This tournament might be interesting in the future, but I don’t think we can do it,” Ceferin told AFP. “The calendar is so dense.
“I don’t know where I can put a tournament for a week or two in May. I think it’s impossible.”
Istanbul, who was supposed to host this season’s Champions League Final, have been awarded next season’s Final instead.
The 2019-20 Final will be carried out at the Estadio da Luz on August 23.
