Shakhtar Donetsk coach Luis Castro concedes Inter ‘ran riot’ after the second goal in a 5-0 Europa League semi-final. ‘Inter proved their superiority.’

The Ukrainians were unbeaten in 11 competitive games and had beaten FC Basel 4-1 in the quarter-final, but were humiliated 5-0 this evening.

“Psychologically, it’s a difficult day for us to deal with,” confessed the coach in his press conference.

“Inter won, we were unable to play at our usual level. We had a chance in the first half with Marcos Antonio, then another we didn’t make the most of after the break.

“The Nerazzurri converted one of only two chances, but after their second goal, we were unable to react, so Inter ran riot. Our Europa League campaign has been very good, but this defeat will stay with us. All we can do is congratulate Inter and look to the future.”

The first two goals were both headers, but then Antonio Conte’s men struck repeatedly on the counter-attack with a high press.

“We were unable to close them down on the flank where they repeatedly caused us problems throughout the match. We studied Inter well and knew they could be dangerous on corners, but if it was an even match until then, after the second goal, Inter proved their superiority.

“Having reached the semi-final is something to be proud of and we mustn’t forget that journey. We have to fix some of these errors and look forward, but we cannot just ignore the season before this evening.”
