Davide Nicola said an emotional farewell to fans after Genoa finally announced he had been sacked, after already naming Rolando Maran as his successor.

Nicola was their third coach of the 2019-20 campaign and took over on December 28, when the team was rock bottom of the table.

Davide Nicola said an emotional farewell to fans after Genoa finally announced he had been sacked, after already naming Rolando Maran as his successor.

Nicola was their third coach of the 2019-20 campaign and took over on December 28, when the team was rock bottom of the table.

He steered them to Serie A safety and was loved by the fans, but still fired with a brief statement this evening.

It was almost a futile gesture, considering director of sport Daniele Faggiano had already said in a press conference this afternoon that Maran was just working out the final red tape before signing the contract.

“Results are achieved by a team and thanks to the team we reached one we wanted with all our hearts: keeping Genoa in Serie A,” wrote Nicola on social media.

“It was in every way a team success: President, club, directors, staff, players and every single person at Genoa CFC that we had the honour of collaborating with over these seven wonderful months. I sincerely thank you!

“And it was the victory of the fans, by our sides throughout everything: women and men who I hope can experience the greatest joy with these club colours, relishing the values of sport.

“I read every one of your messages: you were marvellous, all of you. And you moved me.

“We’ll see each other on the pitch, I am sure, and I will carry your affection with my forever. Thank you Genoa CFC, thank you city of Genoa, Forza Grifone.”
