Roma are back in negotiations with Manchester United for Chris Smalling, as they can raise the €20m by selling Patrik Schick to Bayer Leverkusen.

The defender spent last season on loan at the Stadio Olimpico, but could not agree terms to make the deal permanent or even keep him for the rest of their Europa League campaign.

There were other offers from the likes of Inter, Newcastle United and West Ham United, but Smalling always had his eye on a return to Rome.

According to Sportitalia director Alfredo Pedullà, the Giallorossi can finally purchase him outright for the €20m asking price.

This is because they are on the verge of raising €30m by selling striker Schick to Bayer Leverkusen following his one-season spell in Germany with RB Leipzig.
